THIS RUG'S STORY:

Meaning "mixture" or "blend" in Arabic, this rug is an unlikely combination of 2 tribes - Beni Ourain and Boujad. The actual knot construction is like a Boujad, but the lighter base and neutral tones give the nod to the Beni Ourain style. The theory behind this one is that the woman who created it was from Boujad, but later moved to the Middle Atlas region and kept her weaving style. We'll never know for sure - but what a neat piece!

Also worth mentioning is the pink tassels and pink woven into the base. You can see it from the back. Another nod to the woman's Boujad roots as Beni Ourain rugs rarely have color woven into the warp.

ABOUT MOROCCAN RUGS:

Each vintage Moroccan rug is hand woven and knotted by Berber women of the tribal region specified. This level of craftsmanship can take up to weeks or months to complete a single rug. Weaving techniques have been passed down through the generations. The patterns, designs, and colors in each rug vary with each rug, weaver, and tribe – so each piece is truly a unique work of art and 2 pieces will never be the same. Often these rugs have been handed down through the families who created them, and have been uncovered from the mountain and rural areas of Morocco.
