THIS RUG'S STORY:

Most Beni Ourain rugs feature high pile, but this one is lower pile consistent with its age. At over 40 years old, this piece of Berber art is from the Marmoucha tribe, a sub-tribe of the Beni Ourain, known for their intricate designs.

So much character in this one, it doesn't come without imperfections. But the true beauty is in the design and intricate pattern, and how it shifts in the middle of the rug. Often times the woman would weave these rugs and sometimes abandon a design or start again in a different way.

Woven in the Middle Atlas mountain region in Morocco where temperatures can change drastically, these pieces are significant to Berber culture as the higher pile kept members of the family warm. Traditionally these rugs were not used purely for decorative purposes, but more commonly as blankets or to sleep on!

ABOUT MOROCCAN RUGS:

Each vintage Moroccan rug is hand woven and knotted by Berber women of the tribal region specified. This level of craftsmanship can take up to weeks or months to complete a single rug. Weaving techniques have been passed down through the generations. The patterns, designs, and colors in each rug vary with each rug, weaver, and tribe – so each piece is truly a unique work of art and 2 pieces will never be the same. Often these rugs have been handed down through the families who created them, and have been uncovered from the mountain and rural areas of Morocco.
