THIS RUG'S STORY:
This rug has a very interesting story! I named it Khouya, meaning "brother" in Darija (Moroccan Arabic) because this vintage Beni Ourain/Marmoucha was actually divided in half by 2 brothers and then later woven back together. I learned that dividing the rugs can be quite common in the culture when one of the eldest family members passes. Such a cool story though for this piece! It also features various motifs, like a teapot and a goat. Also, 1985 and 1986 have been woven in, signifying when it was created.

Beni Ourains are known for their high pile and reversible design. You'll see from the pictures, the back is also beautiful. This rug was woven in the Middle Atlas mountain region in Morocco, where temperatures can change drastically. These pieces are significant to Berber culture as the higher pile kept members of the family warm. Traditionally these rugs were not used purely for decorative purposes, but more commonly as blankets or to sleep on!

    ABOUT MOROCCAN RUGS:

Each vintage Moroccan rug is hand woven and knotted by Berber women of the tribal region specified. This level of craftsmanship can take up to weeks or months to complete a single rug. Weaving techniques have been passed down through the generations. The patterns, designs, and colors in each rug vary with each rug, weaver, and tribe – so each piece is truly a unique work of art and 2 pieces will never be the same. Often these rugs have been handed down through the families who created them, and have been uncovered from the mountain and rural areas of Morocco.
